‘In this house, no one can hear you scream’
The House – original title: Huset – is a 2016 Norwegian horror feature film written and directed by Reinert Kiil (Christmas Blood). The movie stars Frederik von Lüttichau, Mats Reinhardt and Sondre Krogtoft Larsen.
Plot:
Two German soldiers have taken a Norwegian soldier as prisoner, during one of the cold winter nights during WW2. They are thankful that they find a lonely house out in the wilderness, but the houses aren’t that cozy after all…
Reviews:
“The House is an excellent exercise in atmosphere above anything else. Reinert Kiil crafts a compelling, simple concept from a chilly, wintry setting with intriguing period tones. Connecting with its creepiness just requires a deep appreciation of tiptoeing down haunted hallways, constant creaking, the persistent metronome of a pendulum clock, etc.” Ian Sedensky, Culture Crypt
” …the actors are truly amazing in this movie. The three main characters go through a lot, and also offer great insight through stories from their life. It’s engaging and fascinating, so when the focus shifts from this, the movie suffers […] But the last half of the movie just drags it down so much.” Karin Adelgaard, Heaven of Horror
“You get some terrifying shapes, but the film is really about the encroaching helplessness, the characters themselves and the creaks and groans of a very lonely house. With terrific performances, atmosphere for days and folks behind the camera who know how to play you, The House is destined for “insta-classic” status.” Michael Klug, Horrorfreak News
“Even if you leave the theater feeling confused by the story, there’s no denying that this is a well made, visually pleasing film. The use of sound, great acting, and well fitted jumpscares all combine to make a fantastic and dreadful atmosphere. This is a horror film that does Norway justice.” Mania Daniel, Modern Horrors
“Reinert Kiil knows a lot about movies, and I am sure he knows a lot about making movies too. His high ambitions are clearly on display. However, the execution of The House is ultimately too weak when taking aim at the classic scary house genre. You have seen it all before, and even though the story is solid, it’s also a bit covered in dust. Just like old houses.” Nordic Fantasy
