I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016)

I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House is a 2016 American-Canadian horror film written and directed by Osgood ‘Oz’ Perkins, son of Anthony Perkins. Osgood’s first acting role was in 1983’s Psycho II, in which he briefly appeared as the twelve-year-old version of the Norman Bates character his father had portrayed. Keeping it in the family, Elvis Perkins provided the film’s score.

Ruth Wilson stars as a live-in nurse who suspects her elderly employer’s house may be haunted. It premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and debuted on Netflix on October 28, 2016.

i-am-the-pretty-thing-that-lives-in-the-house-tiff

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Oz Perkins explained what inspired him:

“I had written a shorter thing about a woman in a head cast, who was in a bed in an old American house, whose father was a horror writer, and she was being taken care of by nurses. Then, one day, it just changed. I’m a believer that, once you start writing something, it does take on a life of its own. I had laid all the track for this one thing, and it just reversed itself, and bloomed into this thing. A lot of the best, dreamy stuff happens that way.”

Main cast:

Ruth Wilson, Paula Prentiss, Bob Balaban (Altered States) and Lucy Boynton

Plot:

When author Iris Bloom becomes bedridden, her estate manager, Mr. Waxcap, hires a live-in nurse, Lily. Lily comes to believe that Bloom’s most popular horror novel may be based on a real-life murder Bloom possibly committed at the house…

i_am_the_pretty_thing_still_1_h_2016

Reviews:

“Proving February was no fluke, Perkins has made a vintage haunted-house thriller that owes more to the creeping dread of Polanski, Kubrick or Lynch than to more bloodthirsty recent subgenres of horror. It may ultimately impress more with its brooding literary atmosphere than with its familiar narrative ingredients, but this crisp little mood piece still jangles the nerves.” Stephen Dalton, The Hollywood Reporter

” …Brit stage luminary Wilson delivers a hardworking turn that nonetheless can’t render a familiar character type fascinating enough in a vacuum, with so little support in the writing … Aesthetically, the stripped-down yet opaque qualities of “Pretty Thing” work to a degree. As applied to story and character definition, however, that same stylistic approach ends up making the film seem simply undercooked.” Dennis Harvey, Variety

i-am-the-pretty-thing-1

“This is not a movie of gore or plot. Instead, voice-over in lyrically written prose from the nurse guides viewers on a meditation through the haunted house, while we watch her fix the carpet that’s always somehow folding over (even though she’s the only one who’s walking around), or run her finger over a bubble under the whitewashed walls of the pristine colonial home of her new patient, elderly horror novelist Iris Blum (Paula Prentiss).” April Wolf, The Village Voice

“It’s commendable that Perkins seems wholly uninterested in the tropes of the genre: there’s only one jump scare, hardly any gore and no final girl. The elusiveness of the narrative, however, grows weary fast. When Polly eventually makes an appearance, Perkins stubbornly keeps the reason behind her undoing murky. There is zero payoff, so why stick with it?” Nigel M Smith, The Guardian

” …a horror movie that forgot to be a horror movie—void of any real scares, Perkins’ sophomore effort is all about exposition and building atmospheric tension within the walls of an old home. The problem, however, is that the film never does anything interesting (or even remotely scary) with all the tension it so meticulously creates.” Ryan, The Missing Reel

Plot:

Stan Miller (McGinley) is a perpetually disgruntled former sheriff of a small New England town who was forced into retirement. Together, they valiantly fight a plague of unleashed demons that have been haunting the town, which just happens to be built on the site of a massive 17th century witch burning.

Reviews:

Stan Against Evil might not be the most original program that you watch on TV this season, but there’s no denying the passion and love for the genre that just oozes out of IFC’s new series. There is a strong, fun, macabre mentality at play here and the episodes push binge-worthy storytelling where cliffhangers are populating most of the episodes.” Daniel Kurland, Den of Geek!

stan-against-evil-768x511

“The main reason to tune in to this cheerfully goofy show is to see typically excellent performances from leads John C. McGinley and Janet Varney, who work well together … The only recurring annoyance is that the title character’s constant litany of complaints contain a lot of lazy sexist jokes, which the show seems to think are funnier and more original than they are.” Maureen Ryan, Variety

john-c-mcginley-deborah-baker-jr-and-janet-varney-in-stan-against-evil-2016

“The effects for the witches (who love popping up for jump scares) are familiarly latex-looking or CGI cheap, an economic necessity that’s either endearingly part of the joke or tossed-off, depending … Still, the cast is game, and, if you’re looking for a knockoff Bruce Campbell this Halloween season, you could do a lot worse than John C. McGinley.” Dennis Perkins, A.V. Club

stan-against-evil-2016-witch

“ …it’s a sort of Mayberry RFD strained through Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with as many bad words as basic cable will allow. There is a bit of a through line, a low-lying arc; but it’s basically episodic television, each week giving its heroes a new sort of spook to understand and dispatch … Stan is busy enough and its players … appealing enough to keep you interested if not really invested.” Robert Lloyd, Los Angeles Times

evil-outside-the-door-stan-against-evil-2016

“Stan’s nothing more than an insufferably sexist and homophobic throwback, willing to risk everyone’s life in order to prove that Starsky and Hutch were secretly gay. At best, Stan Against Evil could be described as a campy mash-up, some sort of would-be Wet Hot American Horror Story, but Gould’s no Lloyd Kaufman, and his series will be lucky if it runs longer than the buffoonish cartoon of a series it most echoes, The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo.” Aaron Riccio, Slant magazine

The story focuses on a group of U.S. Marines attempting to survive after a training mission against warfare A.I. goes wrong.

Opening plot:

In a technologically advanced near future, Katherine Mills, a cyborg working for Harbinger Corporation, discovers a reprogramming anomaly regarding a warfare A.I. system located at Harbinger I Training Facility, an undisclosed military training island. She meets with Captain Damien Bukes and his team consisting of Drifter, Robinson, Cutbill, Goodwin, Hackett, and Loftus – all of whom have been assigned to a two-day training mission at Harbinger I.

The first encounter proves easy for the team as they eliminate A.I. drones from a vantage point. During the battle, Mills discovers an advanced S.A.R. (Study Analyze Reprogram) unit, S.A.R.-003, but is unable to access it. That night, Drifter and Mills discuss their pasts and Bukes’ disdain for her. Later, Loftus is killed by the S.A.R. unit.

The next day, they discover Loftus’s body at the location of the first encounter. The drones take the team’s original vantage point and kill Hackett. They discover the A.I. is adapting and learning from them…

Reviews:

” …it’s a brisk, accomplished effort with a lot more wit, integrity, and intelligence than some of the more lavishly-budgeted genre movies which overwhelm the multiplexes. Our command… watch Kill Command.” Paul Mount, Starburst

“For a low-budget British film, this has great robot/effects design – courtesy of writer/director Steven Gomez’s background in visual effects. However, it has an over familiar premise, not much in the way of plot and is even a touch monotonous in the action department.” The Kim Newman Web Sitekill-command-2016-mike-noble

“The bare-bones storytelling and character-development-on-the-fly might be indebted to Walter Hill’s work on Alien, but Gomez, a former visual effects artist making his debut, doesn’t have the chops to turn it into anything remotely intriguing, let alone special. Along with the European ensemble cast talking with cockamamie American accents, mouthing dialogue taken from the Bumper Book of Soldier Clichés written by James Cameron…” Martyn Contario, SciFiNow

“It’s a sci-fi action thriller whose borrowings are very plain, but it’s decent and watchable nonetheless, with an interesting central character premise … Gamers will have a bit of deja vu watching this but it is a well managed movie with some cool, controlled performances among the detonations.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

vanessa-kirby-sci-fi-horror-kill-command-2016

“In terms of the performances, Kirby comes off best, aided by some striking VFX work on her glowing blue eyes, but the screenplay fails to deliver on the promising resentment that her presence on the mission initially provokes. As robo thrillers go, this has its moments, but the mechanical script could have used a little more in the way of human warmth.” Matthew Turner, The List

“The film’s main asset – the impressive digital effects that create the formidable sentient battle machines – is also its main problem. Having designed the robots, the film-makers show them off to the audience at every available opportunity, ignoring the basic rule of cinema that the most effective threat is the one that we create in our own minds.” Wendy Ide, The Observer

“Poon’s style is so easy to follow that she brings us all into the memory palace of Hannibal Lecter, helping us understand what he loves about exotic fare, why he prepares and presents his dishes in such a curious manner. These recipes are complicated and unconventional, but they also make sense. You can follow them. With time and money, you could be just like Hannibal Lecter…” Meredith Borders, Birth. Movies. Death.

“The beauty of the book is the inclusion of Poon’s original concept sketches, which accompany each recipe. She describes the mentality behind her dishes’ colors, textures, and plating techniques. For the beef tenderloin shot she added a bit of raspberry purée to emphasize the rareness of the meat; berry and beef pair quite well together, should you want to serve up a screen-worthy dish of your own at dinnertime.” Jenn Fujikawa, Nerdist

The film is currently on the festival circuit.

Plot:

A couple plots to murder a random stranger just for the thrill of it, but things turn ugly when one of them decides not to go through with it…

Reviews:

“There were too many false endings – plenty of moments where the “mic drop” was reasonably effective and the screen cuts to black – only to have the picture rematerialize … Solid performances in what amounts to a found footage torture porn exercise – doesn’t instill enjoyment, but it does instill technical admiration. I guess you can understand that a film worked on certain levels and still wish you’d never seen it.” Michael Klug, Horrorfreak News

Reviews:

“The story is pretty simple and sure, we may have seen some variations of it before. Still, I don’t feel like I’ve ever watched this particular version of it before, so to me, The Charnel House was an original and very well-told story.” Scream Queen, Heaven of Horror
